There are three main ways to reach Lumbini from Kathmandu. Given how long the road journey is, this is one route where the trade-offs are worth thinking through carefully.

• Flight: The fastest option by far. Flights from Kathmandu to Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa take about 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a 30-to-45-minute road transfer to Lumbini. Several flights run daily, making this the most practical choice if your time in Nepal is limited.
• Tourist Bus: The budget option. Buses run from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa or directly toward Lumbini, typically taking 9 to 10 hours with a mid-route stop. Seats are shared, departure times are fixed, and there’s no door-to-door service.
• Private Car, Jeep, or Van: The most flexible road option. You choose your own departure time, travel directly from your Kathmandu hotel to your hotel in Lumbini, and can stop at Chitwan or other points along the way. Most blockages are cleared within a few hours by road crews, but heavy or continuous rain can occasionally close a section for longer.
